A form of scarification designed to cut the lateral shoot growth of the grass (stolons & rhizomes) encouraging fresh growth and grooming the grass plant, preventing the unsightly patches of straggly grass shoots and seed stalks, often referred to as bents that spring up after mowing.

Verticutting is also used to control weed grasses such as Poa Annua and Yorkshire Fog. It also develops the density and appearance of the lawn and improves how it cuts by making the grass stand up straight (turgid).

Verticutting should be carried out regularly during the growing season to help produce a top quality lawn.

Scarification is the process of removing dead and decaying grass from your lawn known as thatch. It also removes moss and other plant matter and general debris that have become trapped in the grass sward and lawns surface like dead leaves. It also helps control weeds and unsightly weed grass too.

Why scarify your lawn

Scarifying your lawn is an important part of lawn care and can be done throughout the year but is best done in the Spring and Autumn. Removing the thatch from your lawn dramatically improves its appearance and condition.

A lawn full of thatch will often be soft and spongy and have a yellow tinged unhealthy look, have poor drainage, aeration and overtime will encourage moss and weeds the thrive.

Scarification removes this thatch and stimulates new fresh growth which promotes a healthy dense sward. It also helps control the spread of weeds and moss and encourages microbial activity within the sward and lawn surface. Regular scarification of your grass will dramatically improve the health and appearance of your lawn.

What is aeration?

Aeration is the process of improving air circulation and relieving compaction in the sward and rootzone. This is done by making smalls holes in the lawn surface, called spiking or removing small plugs of sward and soil, called hollow tining.

Why aerate your lawn?

Aeration improves the air circulation and water penetration into the sward and rootzone of the lawn. The small holes made by aeration allow the grass roots to grow deep into the lawns surface, helping them find fresh nutrients and water. Compaction of the lawns surfaces and rootzone by people constantly walking over it or playing games causes poor drainage and stops the grass from putting down its roots. Aeration relieves this compaction allowing roots to grow and water and air to circulate. Did you know, grass roots grow in the space around the soil particles, not through them!

Improving the aeration in your lawn allows the rootzone to warm up quicker in the Spring and gives your grass a head-start. Air warms up quicker than water so warm soil will encourage quicker growth and will also improve the microbial activity in the soil helping to improve the rootzone and the overall health of your lawn
